Explaining the Unexplained

Although couples often feel helpless upon hearing the diagnosis “unexplained infertility, it is actually great news. “Unexplained infertility” actually means there is no physiological reason for a woman not to become pregnant. So it may be more helpful to look at it this way - you have the medical proof that there is no physical problem, you are not infertile, you just haven’t conceived yet!

Recently the media has become saturated with stories proclaiming the rise of “infertility” and our increasing “need” for medical intervention. It is now an unfortunate but common belief that it's just not easy to have a baby. Women can become so preoccupied with becoming pregnant that they prematurely rush in for medical testing. The stress brought on by this invasive protocol alone can be enough to impede the natural process.
At present time women aged 35 and up are immediately considered “high-risk” even though births to women over 40 have increased by 50% in the last 20 years. Hearing the words “high risk” is often enough to cause women devastating emotional upset and to seriously increase their already soaring stress levels.

Negative feelings (such as low self-esteem, past trauma, abuse, or guilt following an abortion) left unexpressed and/or unresolved hold considerable energy, which can all block conception. Stress caused by such issues, by the failure to conceive, by invasive medical procedures, or simply by our pace of life, triggers the sympathetic nervous system - the ‘fight or flight’ response.
This response is a prehistoric response that evolved to enable us to deal with potentially dangerous situations, such as being confronted by a predator. It gave us the ability to react immediately to a situation by either fighting or running away from a threat (fight or flight). The accompanying physical changes that are triggered are all aimed at increasing our strength, speed and stamina – the body’s energy being diverted to the areas of the body concerned with actual ‘fight’ or ‘flight. The heart rate and breathing rate accelerate to pump extra blood and oxygen to the muscles of the arms and legs (for fighting or running) and any processes not concerned with defence are inhibited. Unfortunately, the reproductive system is one of the first to be affected, along with the digestive system and the immune system. Blood is diverted away from these processes, to the muscles for defence. The fight / flight response is all about defence and immediate short term survival. Reproduction, digestion and our immune system are all long term survival mechanisms which are put on hold when we are perceived to be under immediate threat.
In current times, this response persists and although we are not often physically threatened, the ‘fight / flight’ response is triggered more often by stress. When the‘fight / flight’ response is triggered the body is under stress and unable to keep the mind and body in a state of harmony and balance. This can lead to a variety of stress-related symptoms including “unexplained infertility.”

Hypnotherapy provides a very effective means of releasing stress and restoring balance to the mind and body. It enables women to re-establish the balance essential for maintaining the hormone levels conducive to conception, a viable pregnancy and birth.
