'It was a wonderful birth and exactly what Greg and I had hoped for'

Kaysia’s Story

Just thought I would drop you an email to let you know that mine and Greg’s little girl was born on the 25th of February 2009 at Darley Dale Birth centre weighing 7lb 12ozs.

Although I wasn’t sure at the time I started having surges at about 9 o’clock at night on Pancake Day, and me and Greg entertained our selves over the next few hours making blueberry pancakes, watching TV and later relaxing to the HypnoBirthing CD.
The surges were the same tightening feeling that I’d felt with the Braxton Hicks, just lower down and gradually increased in frequency till about 2am when they were coming every 3 or 4 minutes, at which point I’d been told by my midwife I should ring the Birth Centre. My husband rang in and was asked by the midwife if I’d tried taking any pain killers or getting in the bath to make things easier and he had to explain I wanted to come in to have my baby, not for pain relief!

When we got to the centre at about 2.30am the midwife examined me and found I was only 1cm dilated and the cervix half shortened so she suggested I go back home and that I’d only dilate at between 1/2 cm to 1cm an hour and so would likely be in labour for another 9 or so hours.

We went back home but I was too excited to sleep so spent most of the next few hours in the bath listening to the Rainbow Relaxation and doing the slow breathing with the surges. About 3 hours later, once it hit about 5.30 am I started getting the urge to push so we rang ahead and headed back to the Birth Centre.

The midwife examined me again at 6am and found I was 8-9cm dilated and that we wouldn’t be waiting much longer for our baby! I asked if the birthing pool could be run but she said there just wasn’t time and so I started breathing the baby down. Unfortunately Darley Dale have a policy to transfer you to Chesterfield Hospital if you are ‘pushing’ for longer than an hour so I had to start really pushing on the midwife’s advice, which was very tiring but not painful.

Baby Isla was finally in mine and Greg’s arms at 7am, bright and alert since I hadn’t needed any pain killers and breast feeding in about 5 minutes. It was a wonderful birth and exactly what Greg and I had hoped for. Thank you so much for all your help and support, and all the best to the rest of the HypnoBirthing babies.

Yours,

Kaysia, Greg and Isla.
